Headspace

Australia’s National Youth Mental Health Foundation was established in 2006 under the Federal Government’s Promoting Mental Health – Mental Health Initiative. This initiative is in response to the large number of young people experiencing mental health issues, low help seeking rates and the importance of early intervention.

This funding was used to develop headspace –a youth friendly, community-based health service for young people aged 12-25, where they can receive help for a range of issues including health, education, work, and drug and alcohol problems. These platforms are integrated service centres staffed by general practitioners, counselors, mental health workers, youth workers, vocational and drug and alcohol workers who have specific expertise in working with young people, and aims to be family inclusive. Headspace has an early intervention focus, and is designed to complement (not replace) existing tertiary/crisis mental health services.

In early 2008, a consortium made up of 12 local services was successful in receiving funding to set up a platform servicing the Frankston and Mornington Peninsula regions.

The three main functions of Peninsula headspace are

  • Direct client service – providing referrals, interventions and support to young people and   their families
  • Community education – increasing mental health literacy, reducing stigma and increasing help seeking
  • Service development – developing ways for existing services to work better together, improving outcomes for young people
